Becoming a Person of Integrity

by Ben Armacost

Think for a moment about the person you appreciate most in life. It may be your best friend, maybe it is a co-worker, or perhaps a famous person you've never met. Regardless of who it is, I'm willing to bet that the person you appreciate most is a person who is honest, authentic, and virtuous: someone you can really trust–a person of integrity.

Unfortunately, integrity has become a long lost art in the modern business world. The "success syndrome" has driven countless men and women to compromise solid, praiseworthy values for the sake of personal gain. Dishonesty might lead to prosperity of sorts, but will never build a good reputation. Integrity doesn't come automatically, so here are some things every business leader should consider.

How To Boost Your Integrity

  1. Examine your motives. Why do you do the things you do? Your attitudes and motives will always determine your actions.
  2. Know what you believe, and live by your convictions. Are you true to your core values? No one respects a hypocrite–no one!
  3. Take out the rubbish regularly. Ask yourself, "What needs to be changed or eliminated in my life?"
  4. Remember that you are continually being watched. Everything you say and do is helping to build your reputation, good or bad. Are you becoming a person others appreciate?
  5. Be honest, no matter what happens. Honesty may not always seem like the best policy, but dishonesty will always get you in trouble.
  6. Don't compromise under pressure. Are you ready to stay true to yourself even under the toughest circumstances?
  7. Seek God's ability to renew you. God takes great pleasure in giving people a fresh start in life. Let Him give you a "new beginning."

Be a person of integrity. Tomorrow's reputation starts today!

"Live a noble life among the people of the world, that instead of accusing you of doing wrong, they may see the good you do and glorify God..." 1 Peter 2:12 (Bk)
